A fascinating and intriguing history of the Lady Chapel by Fr Anthony Storey was published in 2001. Fr Storey’s
forty page booklet tells of his search to discover the truth about the history of the ruined chapel which his priest brother, Peter, and a friend came upon in 1942 ‘in a haven of peace and quiet reflection not far
from Mount Grace Priory’.
There were traditions, they learned, of visits by pilgrims, of secret burials and the possibility that Margaret
Clitherow’s body was taken there after her execution in York in 1586.
Archaelogical investigation of the site, begun in 1954, revealed the burial of two bodies. Fr Storey discusses their possible identities and explores the history of the Yorkshire families connected with the Chapel and famous visitors including Mary Ward, foundress of the York based IBVM, and John Wesley.
Copies of Mount Grace Lady Chapel, ISBN 1 902645, are available from bookshops or direct from the publishers,
