Sacrament of Reconciliation
During Holy Week Fr Damian is available to anyone wishing to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) at the times advertised
on the cover of this bulletin. Other times are available by mutual arrangement.
Tuesday 3rd April – Chrism Mass
There will be no Mass in Osmotherley on Tuesday due to Fr Damian attending the Chrism Mass. This takes place at the Cathedral, 12 noon. All
Welcome.
Maundy Thursday, 5th April
After the Mass of the Lord’s Supper there will be the traditional watching at the Altar of Repose until midnight. This will end with the
reading of the Gospel of the Arrest. In order to make sure that the Blessed Sacrament is not left unattended during this time there are ‘sign up’ sheets at the back of church, in both Crathorne and
Osmotherley. Please sign up for one of the half-hour slots. Thank you.
Lent Talks
The final talk in this series will be on Wednesday 18th April after the 7.30pm evening Mass. (Wednesday evening Mass changes to 7.30pm on Easter Sunday!) This will examine the resurrection and post-resurrection accounts of Jesus and will be given by Fr Colin Battell, osb.
Mass & Confession Time Changes
From Easter Sunday onwards, 8th April 2007, the Wednesday evening Mass will be at 7.30pm not 8pm as at present. Also times for celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation will move to 9.45-10.15am on Saturday mornings in Osmotherley and on Saturday afternoons, 2.45-3.15pm, at the Lady Chapel. There will be no confessions on Saturday morning at Crathorne and on Saturday evening in Osmotherley. If parishioners have any objection to these changes please address them directly to either Mr Tom O’Connor, Chairman of the Parish Pastoral Council, (Tel: 01609 883500) or Fr Damian.
Homily – 5th Sunday of Lent: Go, sin no more!
A number of parishioners have asked for a ‘reminder’ of the six points made in last week’s homily. These were:
1. We need a realistic understanding of the power that habits, of thought, word and deed, can exert over us. (cf. Catechism Catholic Church 1857f, 1735 on conditions for ‘mortal sin’).
2. We need to adopt a ‘radical self honesty’ with regards to our habits, acknowledging the hold they have on us and not being afraid of
them. According to the Monastic Fathers, getting them into the ‘open’ brings the light of Christ to bear on them and lessens their grip on us.
3. We need to acknowledge that, if we could break the power habits have over us, we would. Habits require a lot of battling to make progress, we shouldn’t stop trying but
rather be gentle with ourselves when old habits master us once more.
4. We need to recognise the importance of ‘intention’ when celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation. When we celebrate the Sacrament our intention is not to sin again,
to change our lives around and live as Christ wants us to live. This ‘intention’ is important, irrespective of whether, through habit or weakness, we find ourselves doing the same thing later.
5. We should never underestimate the grace of the Sacrament in helping us fight against habit and temptation.
6. In St Benedict’s words ‘we should never loose hope in Gods mercy’. We get discouraged with ourselves but God never gets discouraged with us!
I hope these few points are helpful!!
